Here are some summaries of some of his books. I'll add more soon, so come
back. I've tried to give good summaries, without giving away any "spoiler"
information.
Needful Things
The final destruction of Castle Rock, Maine is brought about by a devil disguised
as a mesmerizing shop owner. Leland Gaunt, owner of Needful things, goes about
setting a large percentage of the residents against one another by offering them
each the one item that they would do anything to possess. They pay with whatever
money they can afford, and a small prank to be played on one of their town mates.
Old grudges and bad feelings are brought to a head by the mischievous deeds.
As they turn against each other one by one, Mr. Gaunt plans the ultimate prank
involving several crates filled with dynamite…
1991 The Shining
A young boy and his parents go to a scenic hotel in Colorado as caretakers for
the winter. Jack Torrance, the father, is an aspiring novelist and a recovering
alcoholic. Wendy Torrance, the mother, is hoping that the job will give the family
one last chance at happiness. . Danny Torrance, the son, is a boy with a very
powerful gift. A gift that enables him to find what’s been lost and to see
the horror of what’s to come. The booming voice in his nightmares is without
a face, but the truth may be worse than anything Danny can imagine. The real
terror is in the fact that the only power to exceed his own is possessed by the
hotel itself.
1977 The Dead Zone
After an ice skating accident when he was six years old, Johnny Smith had an
isolated precognitive flash. Years later, a horrible car accident sends Johnny
into a coma for almost five years. When he awakens, he discovers that he has
the ability to see into a person’s past and often their future, by simply
touching them or something belonging to them. When he shakes hands with a politician
who has the potential to bring about World War III, he learns that his power
may be more of a curse than a gift.
1979 The Long Walk
The scariest thing about this story is how plausible it is. Set in the future,
one hundred young men willingly enter a contest to see who can walk the farthest.
They must walk at least four miles per hour or they receive a warning. After
their third warning they are…out of the walk. The winner gets whatever he
wants for the rest of his life. The losers are killed.
1979 Carrie
When a teenage girl reaches puberty, she learns that she possesses telekinetic
powers. Tortured by her classmates her entire life, Carrie is finally pushed
beyond her limit at the Senior Prom. A cruel prank is the final straw and she
unleashes her power on the entire town.
1974 ‘Salem’s Lot
Ben Mears returns to his hometown to confront some old demons only to discover
that much worse demons have arrived. He learns that the man who bought the old
house in his nightmares is not a man at all, but a modern day Dracula. The residents
of ‘Salem’s Lot fall victim one by one, first to the sinister new comer,
and then to one another.
1975 Rage
The first of the Bachman Books, Rage is the tale of a high school student who
snaps. He shoots a teacher and takes an entire classroom hostage.
1977 The Stand
A government-developed virus escapes a lab and infects a government employee.
He escapes the installation before it’s sealed and the disease spreads.
It wipes out over 99% of the population. The survivors are drawn by two recurring
dreams to either Boulder, Colorado (if they’re good) or Las Vegas, Nevada
(if they’re evil). The story builds towards an inescapable confrontation
between the two opposing forces.
1978 Misery
Paul Sheldon, a popular author, gets into a car accident after celebrating the
completion of his new novel with a little too much Dom Perignon. When he regains
consciousness, he discovers that his number one fan is caring him for. Annie
Wilkes, an ex-nurse, rescued him from his over-turned car but failed to take
him to the hospital after realizing that she’d saved her favorite author.
Paul soon learns that Annie is a very unstable person. She reacts to things she
doesn’t like with growing fury. When Annie reads the latest of his novels
and discovers that he’s killed off her favorite character, she decides that
it’s up to her to save his soul, using whatever means necessary.
1987 Firestarter
While in college, Andy and Vicky participate in a government experiment for a
little extra cash. They’re injected with a substance known only as Lot 6.
As a result, Andy and Vicky (as well as several other experiment participants)
obtain varying degrees of supernatural abilities. The government agency responsible,
the Shop, are both intrigued and wary when Andy and Vicky marry and have a baby
girl. They learn that the girl, Charly, has much more power than either of her
parents. She is able to start fires using only her mind. The Shop will do whatever
they have to in order to capture and use Charly, but even they have underestimated
her power and what she’s willing to do to stay free.
1980 Cujo
A St. Bernard chases a rabbit into a hole and is bitten by a rabid bat. As the
illness takes over his brain, the once good dog is overtaken by an urge to kill.
When the only person who has any control over him leaves town, Cujo begins his
rampage. Donna Trenton and her son Tad arrive on Cujo’s domain hoping to
get their car fixed. Since Cujo’s entire family is either dead or on vacation,
there is no one to hear Donna’s screams for help when the car won’t
start and she realizes that they’re trapped.
1981 Christine
Arnie Cunningham sees a red Plymouth Fury and falls instantly in love. It’s
not in very good shape, but he knows that he can fix it up. He is undaunted when
he learns that the car has a disturbing past. He becomes more and more obsessed
as he gets the car, Christine, all fixed up. The only thing that bothers him
is the fact that he can’t exactly remember making most of the repairs. A
gang of Bullies from Arnie’s school trashes Christine and are run down one
by one by a car without a driver.
1983 Pet Semetary
Louis, Rachel, Ellie, and Gage Creed move to a house in rural Maine. A friendly
neighbor named Jud shows them a path behind their house that leads to a pet cemetery.
While Rachel and the kids are on vacation, a truck runs over Church, the family’s
cat. Jud then introduces Louis to a second graveyard beyond the pet cemetery.
This graveyard belonged to the Mic Mac Indians and possesses a terrifying power.
Church returns to the land of the living only hours after being buried in the
poison ground and Louis begins to realize that, sometimes, dead is better.
1983 The Eyes of the Dragon
Randall Flagg (the Dark Man from the Stand) returns as an advisor to a king in
this fairytale-type story. Prince Peter stands accused of the murder of his father
due to a set up by Flagg. Peter’s weak younger brother Thomas serves as
a pawn in Flagg’s evil plan to bring about the ruin of the country. The
only hope is for Peter to escape the high tower known as The Needle where he’s
being held prisoner. His plan centers around his mother’s doll house and
a tiny spinning wheel.
1987 Cycle of the Werewolf
Every month the werewolf slaughters a resident of the small town of Tarker’s
Mill. The only person with a clue to the identity of the werewolf is a young
boy in a wheelchair. Skeleton Crew
